In addition to three full-time fire departments, the Region of Waterloo also hosts four volunteer township fire departments. In total, some 300 volunteers service a population of over 56,700 within an area of 1,050 square kilometers. Within the four volunteer departments there are twelve fire stations which house over 40 apparatuses. Each township employs a fire chief to oversee the operations of the volunteer departments within their jurisdiction. As well, the township departments operate on a system of mutual aid in which units will support one another throughout the region.
